Sketches from Life
I’ve been enjoying my sketching. It allows me to maintain/improve my skills while I’m not feeling inspired to work on other projects, which is why I started. But it also turns out to be pretty relaxing, which I didn’t really expect, although I should have.
While I’ve enjoyed sharing the results with you, looking back, those colored boxes seem a little cluttered and disjointed looking. But a lot of the individual sketches aren’t worthy of their own featured space. So, I’m going to try to be at least a little selective and just show you one or two of the more successful sketches when I post. Less cluttered that way. If you are interested, I post more of these sketches on my facebook page.
And I’ve narrowed it down to three. Not one or two. Not sure how well this is going to work ![]()

Actually, these are more like full works and not sketches. Not because of the subjects (stuff in my house) but because I spent about 90 minutes on each. Many weeks, I don’t have that much time. Future posts will likely be more “sketchy.”
In other news, I finished Adam Bede. It had a lot of interesting passages but on the whole probably wasn’t worth the effort. Now I’m reading the second Stieg Larsson book. Quite a change. The Evensong service we’ve been working on in choir rehearsals is Sunday, March 13. I’m looking forward to it!

Round is a Shape . . .

. . . just not a shape that is easily covered. We have had various temporary window coverings for our round window. I’ve had this idea for a while, but it took me a very long time to gather the materials and put it together.
I found (eventually) 3 old doilies that were the right size. Over the course of several days, I put each one in a freezer bag with a mixture of white glue and water and squished it to ensure complete and relatively even saturation and spread it out on waxed paper to dry. This stiffening process is permanent. If you think you might want to reverse this process later, there are reversible stiffening methods. I let each one dry completely before stiffening the next.

And then I forgot to take any more pictures. Oops. But after they were all dry and stiff, I stacked them in order of descending size and used a combination of more white glue and some haphazard sewing/ties to attach them together. The stains bothered me a bit, so I took some white paint and tried to make it all blend together by daubing white paint here and there to both cover some of the worst spots and balance the differences in hue.
And then I put it up. I’m pretty happy with the result.

I’ve just returned from visiting my family in California, and while I was there, I photographed this drawing that I did years ago.
